Self-development and learning go hand in hand. These days, most people learn only to earn, but learning for the sake of self-development is a lifelong endeavor that helps us understand various things as they truly are. People often say that "ignorance is bliss," but in truth, ignorance is a direct and proud cause of many mistakes and missteps when we do not know better.
This life is far too short, and we would waste it if we lived only by making mistake after mistake and trying to learn exclusively from our own missteps. Instead, we should strive to understand the underlying principles behind everything, avoiding unnecessary pitfalls so we can build something useful for ourselves, for others, and most importantly, for our own legacy.
We learn from existing knowledge already available out there—published research according to modern scientific terminology—but we also learn from scriptural knowledge that helps us live better lives. Furthermore, we learn from the mistakes and good examples of those who came before us. We gain immense wisdom from studying the biographies of great men of the past, whether they belong to our own tradition or to others. True knowledge and wisdom are universal, meant to be utilized by humanity as a whole; wisdom is not the exclusive property of a single person or a single blind spot, but a common human inheritance to be passed down to future generations.
Thus, self-development centered around continuous learning is spread out right before us, taking off only when we are eager to constantly broaden our horizons. We must seek out both secular and sacred knowledge, benefiting from any jewel of useful knowledge we can implement in our lives—for knowledge without implementation is ultimately useless.
