Learning is a natural process shared by humans and animals alike. We learn instinctively from the moment of birth, as there is an innate ability in every person to acquire understanding.
When we examine how we acquire knowledge, there are two primary sources:
The Rational Source: This is the conventional, scientific way we are all familiar with—observing, experimenting, and deducing knowledge to shape our understanding of the physical world.
The Spiritual Source: This avenue is often ignored in modern discourse, yet it is essential. A person who looks through both "eyes of learning"—the rational and the spiritual—can make complete sense of reality, whether observable or unobservable.
Spiritual knowledge manifests in several ways. Every person is born with an innate baseline of spiritual knowledge (Fitrah). The Qur'an speaks of the primordial covenant where all human souls acknowledged Allah as their Lord. Because of this, nearly every civilization across history retains a concept of a Supreme Being—this foundational knowledge is universal.
Another dimension of spiritual knowledge comes directly from divine scripture. Sacrificing nothing of our intellect, we recognize that holy scriptures are sent by Allah Almighty to humanity to guide us through life's spiritual challenges toward a good, meaningful existence.
Furthermore, spiritual insight can reach us through true dreams. While some dreams are merely reflections of our own mixed-up thoughts and nightmares may come from Shaytan, true and good dreams are glad tidings from Allah. Beyond dreams, human beings also experience intuitive insights, or what many refer to as a "sixth sense."
Thus, we truly perceive and learn when we use both our rational faculties—our five physical senses—and our spiritual senses. By juxtaposing these two sources, we achieve a comprehensive vision of reality. Without spiritual sight, we hold only a very small piece of the total body of knowledge. As believers, we must strive every day to expand our understanding through both dimensions, continuing our growth both rationally and spiritually.
