The Luminous Presence: Reflections on Al-Shamāʾil al-Nabawiyyah
To study the physical description of the Prophet ﷺ is to embark on a journey of love. It is more than just a historical record; it is an invitation to visualize the most perfect human being ever created. In our study of the classical text الشمائل النبوية (The Sublime Qualities of the Prophet ﷺ), we find a portrait painted not with ink, but with the profound awe and devotion of those who saw him.
Every description begins with الحمد لله (Praise be to Allah). In the Arabic language, this is not just a phrase; it is to praise someone or something in a beautiful way for something that is done in a beautiful way. There is no better way to begin the study of the one who was the embodiment of beauty.
The Perfection of the Middle Path
If one word could summarize the physical and character-based traits of the Prophet ﷺ, it would be balance. He was the manifestation of the "middle way."
Height: He was of medium stature (مربوع). He was not strikingly tall, nor was he short. However, a miracle accompanied his presence: when he stood with others, he appeared taller than everyone else, even individuals known for their height like العباس (Abbas RA). This was because no one was permitted to seem physically "above" the Prophet ﷺ.
Build: He was neither fat nor skinny. He had a fit, powerful physique. His heels were lean and fit, yet his feet were described as fleshy and strong—a perfect combination of agility and "manly" strength.
Face and Hair: His face had a slight roundness—not chubby, yet not thin. His hair was the perfect middle ground: not completely straight, but not tightly curly either. It had a beautiful waviness and volume.
A Radiant Complexion
The companions described his skin as having a luminous quality, often likening it to the glow of silver or gold. Interestingly, his complexion would shift based on his environment:
At Home: When he was a resident (مقيم) and not traveling, his skin was white with a healthy tinge of redness.
Traveling: When exposed to the wind and sun of the desert, his skin took on a beautiful, golden-brown hue.
The Gaze and the Voice
The eyes of the Prophet ﷺ were perhaps his most striking feature. The pupils were extremely black, and the whites were strikingly white and clear. He had long, voluminous eyelashes (الأشفار) that added to his majestic presence.
His voice was not soft or weak; it was bright, luminous, and possessed a natural strength. When he spoke, the meanings were as clear as his tone. He was gifted with جوامع الكلم (the ability to speak concisely while conveying vast meanings). His words were described as being like pearls on a string—if the string were cut, they would fall one by one, each perfect, distinct, and precious.
The Testimony of Umm Ma’bad
One of the most famous descriptions comes from a lady named أم معبد (Umm Ma’bad), who met him during the هجرة (Migration). After witnessing a miracle where the Prophet ﷺ milked a thin, weak sheep to provide for everyone, she described him to her husband with poetic precision.
She noted that he did not have a protruding stomach and possessed a slightly larger head—which, among the Arabs, was a sign of كمال العقل (the perfection of intellect). She beautifully captured the effect he had on people:
When someone met him for the first time, they were overcome with الهيبة (awe and majesty). He was cloaked in the grandeur of Allah. But once they spent time with him and experienced his character, that awe turned into deep, abiding love.
Why We Study the Shamāʾil
We study these details because love is often rooted in knowing. To know that he was soft-hearted, that his speech was like jewels, and that his very gait was balanced helps us connect to him ﷺ beyond just laws and rulings. He was a man of immense physical beauty, but it was his character—his خلق—that truly captured the hearts of the world.
As we turn the pages of الشمائل النبوية, we aren't just reading a book; we are looking through a window at the most beautiful sun to ever rise.
نورانی شخصیت: الشمائل النبویہ پر ایک نظر
نبی کریم ﷺ کے حلیہ مبارک اور جسمانی اوصاف کا مطالعہ دراصل محبت کا ایک سفر ہے۔ یہ محض ایک تاریخی ریکارڈ نہیں بلکہ ان لوگوں کی عقیدت اور حیرت سے تیار کردہ ایک تصویر ہے جنہوں نے آپ ﷺ کا دیدار کیا۔ ہماری کتاب الشمائل النبوية (نبی ﷺ کی عظیم الشان صفات) کے مطالعے سے ہمیں ایک ایسی شخصیت کا علم ہوتا ہے جو حسن و جمال کا مکمل نمونہ تھی۔
ہر بیان کا آغاز الحمد لله (تمام تعریفیں اللہ کے لیے ہیں) سے ہوتا ہے۔ عربی زبان میں اس کا مطلب محض لفظی تعریف نہیں، بلکہ کسی کی خوبصورتی اور اس کے خوبصورت کاموں کی وجہ سے بہترین انداز میں ثنا بیان کرنا ہے۔ اس ہستی کے ذکر کے لیے اس سے بہتر کوئی لفظ نہیں ہو سکتا جو خود سراپا جمال تھی۔
اعتدال اور میانہ روی کا حسن
اگر نبی کریم ﷺ کے جسمانی اور اخلاقی اوصاف کو ایک لفظ میں سمویا جائے تو وہ "اعتدال" ہے۔ آپ ﷺ کی ہر صفت میانہ روی کی عکاسی کرتی تھی۔
قد مبارک: آپ ﷺ کا قد درمیانہ (مربوع) تھا۔ آپ ﷺ نہ بہت زیادہ طویل قامت تھے اور نہ ہی پست قد۔ تاہم، یہ آپ ﷺ کا ایک معجزہ تھا کہ جب آپ لوگوں کے درمیان کھڑے ہوتے تو سب سے نمایاں اور طویل نظر آتے، یہاں تک کہ حضرت العباس (رضی اللہ عنہ) جیسے طویل القامت افراد سے بھی آپ ﷺ کا قد بلند معلوم ہوتا، کیونکہ اللہ کو یہ پسند نہ تھا کہ کوئی بھی جسمانی طور پر نبی ﷺ سے "اوپر" نظر آئے۔
جسمانی ساخت: آپ ﷺ نہ تو موٹے تھے اور نہ ہی بہت دبلے، بلکہ آپ کا جسم انتہائی متناسب اور چست تھا۔ آپ ﷺ کی ایڑیاں دبلی اور فٹ تھیں، جبکہ قدم مبارک گوشت سے بھرپور اور مضبوط تھے—جو کہ پھرتی اور مردانہ قوت کا ایک بہترین امتزاج تھا۔
چہرہ اور بال: آپ ﷺ کا چہرہ مبارک ہلکا سا گولائی لیے ہوئے تھا—نہ ہی پرگوشت اور نہ ہی بہت دبلا۔ آپ ﷺ کے بال مبارک نہ تو بالکل سیدھے تھے اور نہ ہی بہت زیادہ گھونگریالے، بلکہ ان میں ایک خوبصورت لہر اور گنجان پن پایا جاتا تھا۔
روشن رنگت
صحابہ کرام آپ ﷺ کی رنگت کو چاندی یا سونے کی چمک سے تشبیہ دیتے تھے۔ دلچسپ بات یہ ہے کہ ماحول کے حساب سے آپ ﷺ کی رنگت میں تبدیلی آتی تھی:
گھر میں: جب آپ ﷺ سفر پر نہیں ہوتے تھے اور مقیم (مقيم) ہوتے، تو آپ ﷺ کی رنگت سفیدی مائل تھی جس میں سرخی کی جھلک نمایاں ہوتی۔
سفر کے دوران: صحرا کی ہوا اور دھوپ کی وجہ سے سفر کے دوران آپ ﷺ کی رنگت میں ایک خوبصورت سنہری بھورا پن آ جاتا تھا۔
بصارت اور آواز کا جادو
نبی کریم ﷺ کی آنکھیں سب سے زیادہ متاثر کن خصوصیت تھیں۔ آنکھوں کی پتلیاں انتہائی سیاہ اور سفیدی بالکل صاف اور نمایاں تھی۔ آپ ﷺ کی پلکیں لمبی اور گنجان (الأشفار) تھیں، جو آپ ﷺ کے رعب و جلال میں اضافہ کرتی تھیں۔
آپ ﷺ کی آواز نرم یا کمزور نہیں تھی، بلکہ وہ روشن، واضح اور قدرتی طور پر طاقتور تھی۔ جب آپ ﷺ گفتگو فرماتے تو مفہوم آواز کی طرح بالکل واضح ہوتا۔ آپ ﷺ کو جوامع الكلم (کم الفاظ میں وسیع معنی بیان کرنے کی صلاحیت) عطا کی گئی تھی۔ آپ ﷺ کے الفاظ ایسے تھے جیسے ایک لڑی میں پروئے ہوئے موتی—اگر وہ لڑی ٹوٹ جائے تو موتی ایک ایک کر کے گریں، ہر لفظ اپنی جگہ مکمل، واضح اور قیمتی۔
حضرت ام معبد کی گواہی
نبی کریم ﷺ کا ایک مشہور وصف حضرت أم معبد (ام معبد) سے مروی ہے، جن سے آپ ﷺ کی ملاقات ہجرت کے دوران ہوئی۔ ایک کمزور اور لاغر بکری سے معجزاتی طور پر دودھ نکالنے کے بعد، انہوں نے اپنے شوہر کے سامنے آپ ﷺ کا نقشہ کچھ یوں کھینچا:
انہوں نے بتایا کہ آپ ﷺ کا پیٹ نکلا ہوا نہیں تھا اور سر مبارک جسم کے تناسب سے تھوڑا بڑا تھا—جو عربوں کے نزدیک كمال العقل (عقل کی کاملیت) کی علامت سمجھا جاتا تھا۔ انہوں نے لوگوں پر آپ ﷺ کے اثر کو بڑے خوبصورت انداز میں بیان کیا:
"جب کوئی شخص پہلی بار آپ ﷺ کو دیکھتا تو وہ الهيبة (رعب اور دبدبہ) سے مغلوب ہو جاتا۔ آپ ﷺ اللہ کی عظمت کی چادر اوڑھے ہوئے معلوم ہوتے تھے۔ لیکن جب کوئی آپ ﷺ کے ساتھ وقت گزارتا اور آپ ﷺ کے اخلاق کا مشاہدہ کرتا، تو وہ رعب گہری اور دائمی محبت میں بدل جاتا۔"
ہم شمائل کا مطالعہ کیوں کرتے ہیں؟
ہم ان تفصیلات کا مطالعہ اس لیے کرتے ہیں کیونکہ محبت کی بنیاد "جاننے" پر ہوتی ہے۔ یہ جاننا کہ آپ ﷺ نرم دل تھے، آپ ﷺ کی گفتگو جواہرات کی طرح تھی، اور آپ ﷺ کی چال ڈھال میں بھی اعتدال تھا، ہمیں آپ ﷺ کے ساتھ ایک قلبی تعلق جوڑنے میں مدد دیتا ہے۔ آپ ﷺ نہ صرف ظاہری حسن کا شاہکار تھے، بلکہ آپ ﷺ کا خلق (کردار و اخلاق) وہ تھا جس نے پوری دنیا کے دل جیت لیے۔
جب ہم الشمائل النبوية کے صفحات پلٹتے ہیں، تو ہم محض ایک کتاب نہیں پڑھ رہے ہوتے، بلکہ ہم کائنات کے اس سب سے خوبصورت سورج کا مشاہدہ کر رہے ہوتے ہیں جو کبھی طلوع ہوا تھا۔
نور الشمائل: تأملات في صفات النبي ﷺ
إن دراسة الأوصاف الخَلقية للنبي ﷺ هي رحلة حب عميقة، فهي تتجاوز كونها مجرد تدوين تاريخي لتصبح دعوة لتخيل أكمل بشر خلقه الله. في دراستنا لكتاب الشمائل النبوية، نجد لوحة رسمها الصحابة والتابعون بمداد الإجلال والمحبة.
تبدأ كل الأوصاف بعبارة الحمد لله، وفي لغتنا الجميلة، لا يعني الحمد مجرد الثناء، بل هو "الثناء على الجميل بالاختيار على وجه التبجيل"، أي أن نمدح شخصاً أو شيئاً بطريقة جميلة لما فعله من أمور جميلة. ولا يوجد أجمل من ذكر مَن كان نموذجاً للجمال في كل شيء.
كمال الوسطية (الاعتدال)
إذا أردنا تلخيص صفات النبي ﷺ الجسدية والخُلقية في كلمة واحدة، فستكون "الوسط". فقد كان عليه الصلاة والسلام يتجنب كل طرف ويلازم الاعتدال.
القوام: كان مربوعاً، أي متوسط القامة؛ لا بالطويل البائن ولا بالقصير. ومع ذلك، كانت تصاحبه معجزة في حضوره: فإذا وقف مع الناس، بدا أطولهم، حتى وإن كان مع طوال القامة مثل عمه العباس (رضي الله عنه)، لأنه لا ينبغي لأحد أن يعلو النبي ﷺ في الهيبة والظهور.
البنيان: لم يكن نحيفاً ولا بديناً، بل كان ذا جسد رياضي قوي. كانت أعقابه نحيفة (من غير لحم كثير)، مما يدل على الرشاقة، بينما كانت قدماه ممتلئتان (لحيمتان) بقوة ورجولة.
الوجه والشعر: كان في وجهه تدوير يسير، ليس بالمستدير جداً ولا بالنحيف الغائر. أما شعره، فكان وسطاً بين النعومة الشديدة والجعونة، فلم يكن سَبِطاً (مسترسلاً جداً) ولا جَعْداً (ملتوياً بشدة)، بل كان فيه تكسر وتموج طبيعي.
البشرة النورانية
وصف الصحابة بشرته بأنها تتلألأ كالفضة أو الذهب. وكان لون بشرته يختلف باختلاف أحواله:
في الحضر: عندما يكون مقيماً لا يسافر، كانت بشرته بيضاء مشربة بحمرة (أبيض مشرب بحمرة).
في السفر: عندما كانت تصيبه ريح الصحراء وشمسها، تكتسب بشرته صبغة سمراء جميلة.
العين والمنطق
كانت عينا النبي ﷺ من أبرز ملامحه جمالاً؛ سوادها شديد السواد وبياضها ناصع البياض. وكانت له أشفار طويلة (رموش كثيفة) تزيد من هيبة نظرته.
أما صوته، فلم يكن ضعيفاً أو خافتاً، بل كان صوتاً مشرقاً جهوراً فيه قوة طبيعية. وكان يتحدث بـ جوامع الكلم (الكلام القليل ذو المعاني الواسعة). وُصفت كلماته بأنها كاللؤلؤ المنظوم في عقد؛ إذا انقطع الخيط، سقطت اللآلئ واحدة تلو الأخرى في جمالها ودقتها ووضوحها.
شهادة أم معبد
من أشهر الأوصاف التي وصلتنا هي وصف السيدة أم معبد، التي التقاها النبي ﷺ أثناء الهجرة. بعد أن رأت معجزة حلب الشاة العجفاء، وصفت النبي ﷺ لزوجها بوصف بليغ.
ذكرت أنه لم يكن ذا بطن ناتئ، وكان عظيم الرأس قليلاً، وهو ما يدل عند العرب على كمال العقل. وصفت أثره في الناس قائلة:
"من رآه من بعيد هابه، ومن خالطه أحبه". فقد كان محاطاً بـ الهيبة وعظمة الله، ولكن من يقترب منه يعشق لين قلبه وحسن خلقه.
لماذا ندرس الشمائل؟
نحن ندرس هذه التفاصيل لأن الحب يبدأ بالمعرفة. إن معرفتنا بأنه كان رقيق القلب، وأن كلامه كالجواهر، وأن مشيته كانت متزنة، تساعدنا على الارتباط به ﷺ روحياً وجسدياً. لقد كان رجلاً ذا جمال باهر، لكن خُلقه هو الذي ملك قلوب العالمين.
حين نقلب صفحات الشمائل النبوية، فنحن لا نقرأ مجرد كتاب، بل نفتح نافذة لننظر إلى أجمل شمس طلعت على هذا الكون.
La Présence Lumineuse : Réflexions sur Al-Shamāʾil al-Nabawiyyah
Étudier les descriptions physiques du Prophète ﷺ est bien plus qu'une simple leçon d'histoire ; c'est une invitation à visualiser l'être humain le plus parfait jamais créé. Dans notre étude du texte classique الشمائل النبوية (Les Qualités Sublimes du Prophète ﷺ), nous découvrons un portrait dessiné non pas avec de l'encre, mais avec la dévotion profonde de ceux qui l'ont côtoyé.
Chaque description commence par الحمد لله (Louange à Allah). En arabe, ce n'est pas seulement une formule ; c'est le fait de louer quelqu'un ou quelque chose d'une manière belle pour une action accomplie de manière belle. Il n'y a pas de meilleur moyen de commencer l'étude de celui qui était l'incarnation même de la beauté.
La Perfection du Juste Milieu
Si un seul mot pouvait résumer les traits physiques et le caractère du Prophète ﷺ, ce serait l'équilibre. Il était la manifestation du "juste milieu" (الوسط).
La Stature : Il était de taille moyenne (مربوع). Il n'était ni d'une grandeur frappante, ni petit. Pourtant, un miracle accompagnait sa présence : lorsqu'il se tenait parmi les gens, il paraissait plus grand que tout le monde, même face à des individus connus pour leur grande taille comme العباس (Abbas RA). C'était une marque d'honneur ; personne ne pouvait sembler physiquement « au-dessus » du Prophète ﷺ.
La Constitution : Il n'était ni corpulent ni maigre. Il avait un physique athlétique et puissant. Ses talons étaient fins et fermes, tandis que ses pieds étaient décrits comme charnus et vigoureux — une alliance parfaite d'agilité et de force masculine.
Le Visage et les Cheveux : Son visage présentait une légère rondeur, sans être joufflu ni émacié. Ses cheveux étaient le parfait compromis : ni totalement raides, ni crépus, mais dotés d'une magnifique ondulation.
Un Teint Radiant
Les compagnons décrivaient sa peau comme ayant une qualité lumineuse, la comparant souvent à l'éclat de l'argent ou de l'or. Son teint variait selon son environnement :
À la maison : Lorsqu'il était résident (مقيم) et ne voyageait pas, sa peau était blanche avec une teinte rosée saine.
En voyage : Exposée au vent et au soleil du désert, sa peau prenait une magnifique teinte dorée ou brune.
Le Regard et la Voix
Les yeux du Prophète ﷺ étaient sans doute son trait le plus captivant. Les pupilles étaient d'un noir profond et le blanc était d'une pureté éclatante. Il avait de longs cils fournis (الأشفار) qui accentuaient la majesté de son regard.
Sa voix n'était ni faible ni effacée ; elle était brillante, lumineuse et possédait une force naturelle. Lorsqu'il parlait, le sens de ses paroles était aussi clair que son ton. Il avait reçu le don de جوامع الكلم (la capacité de parler de manière concise tout en transmettant des sens vastes). Ses paroles étaient décrites comme des perles sur un collier : si le fil venait à se rompre, elles tomberaient une à une, chacune étant parfaite, distincte et précieuse.
Le Témoignage d'Umm Ma’bad
L'une des descriptions les plus célèbres nous vient d'une dame nommée أم معبد (Umm Ma’bad), qui l'a rencontré pendant la هجرة (Hégire). Après avoir été témoin d'un miracle où le Prophète ﷺ a trait une brebis chétive pour nourrir tout le monde, elle l'a décrit à son mari avec une précision poétique.
Elle a noté qu'il n'avait pas le ventre saillant et possédait une tête légèrement large — ce qui, chez les Arabes, était un signe de كمال العقل (la perfection de l'intellect). Elle a magnifiquement capturé l'effet qu'il produisait sur les gens :
« Quiconque le voyait pour la première fois était saisi par الهيبة (la révérence et la majesté). Il était drapé dans la grandeur d'Allah. Mais une fois que l'on passait du temps avec lui et que l'on découvrait son caractère, cette crainte se transformait en un amour profond et durable. »
Pourquoi Étudier la Shamāʾil ?
Nous étudions ces détails car l'amour s'enracine souvent dans la connaissance. Savoir qu'il avait le cœur tendre (لين القلب), que sa parole était semblable à des joyaux et que sa démarche même était équilibrée nous aide à nous connecter à lui ﷺ au-delà des simples lois. Il était un homme d'une immense beauté physique, mais c'est son caractère — son خلق — qui a véritablement conquis les cœurs du monde entier.
En tournant les pages de الشمائل النبوية, nous ne lisons pas seulement un livre ; nous ouvrons une fenêtre pour contempler le plus beau soleil qui se soit jamais levé.
