The Qur’an is an unending ocean of profound knowledge . As the noble Companion Ibn Mas'ud stated: "Whoever wishes to gain knowledge, then he should reflect on the Qur'an, for in it is the knowledge of the first and the last" [al-Tabarani] .
What we learn from the Qur’an cannot be acquired anywhere else . Its light benefits us not only in this worldly life but also in the grave, where our connection with Allah’s Book will provide the answers to the angels' questions . When a believer is asked about their faith and Prophet, they will respond: "I read Allah's Book, believed in it, and obeyed it" [Mishkat al-Masabih] .
When we gather to study Allah's Book, His mercy descends, angels surround us with their wings, and Allah makes the path to Jannah easier . But how can we truly reap the immense blessings (barakah) of this sacred text ?
10 Etiquettes for Benefiting from the Qur'an
- Sincerity (Ikhlaas) & Excellence (Ihsaan) Begin with a pure intention—seeking solely the pleasure and countenance of Allah
. Sincerity elevates our learning to the level of Ihsaan: worshipping Allah as if you see Him, and knowing that even if you cannot see Him, He sees you . - Du'a (Supplication) Constantly ask Allah for beneficial knowledge
. A comprehensive Sunnah prayer is: “O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision and acceptable deeds.” [Ibn Majah] - Seeking Forgiveness (Istighfaar) and Leaving Sins Knowledge is a divine light that Allah places in the heart, and sin extinguishes that light
. Ibn al-Qayyim noted that deprivation of knowledge is a direct consequence of sin . Turning back to Allah through istighfaar polishes the heart and allows it to retain wisdom . - Patience and Determination Sacrifice and persistence are required
. Scholars noted: "If you give all of yourself to knowledge, you will only attain a little part of it." Trust that with every hardship, ease will follow [al-Sharh: 5–6] . - Writing and Taking Notes Knowledge is like wild game (Al-ilmus Sayd); writing is the rope that captures it
. Recording what you learn allows you to review and retain it . - Maintaining a Daily Connection Consistency is key
. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the acts most pleasing to Allah are those done continuously, even if they are small [al-Bukhari] . - Reviewing and Revising Without regular review, memorized knowledge slips away
. The Prophet ﷺ compared one who memorizes the Qur'an to the owner of tied camels—if he keeps them tied, he controls them, but if he releases them, they run away [al-Bukhari] . - Keeping Company with the People of the Qur'an Surround yourself with companions who remind you of Allah and encourage you during times of hardship [al-Kahf: 28]
. A righteous support group keeps you patient and determined on the path . - Making the Qur'an Your Companion Weave recitation into every quiet moment of your day
—whether walking, resting, or traveling . - Implementation (A'mal) Action is the ultimate fruit of knowledge
. Learning is meant to transform our internal character and external deeds .
Reflections on Surah Al-Baqarah (Verses 6–7)
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah categorizes humanity into distinct groups . After describing the Muttaqin (the God-conscious believers who combine sound belief with righteous action) , the text turns to those who openly oppose and reject the truth .
Verse 6: The Reality of Persistent Rejection
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَأَنذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنذِرْهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ"Indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe."
- Understanding Kufr: The root meaning of kufr is to cover or hide something—much like a farmer covering a seed in soil or night covering the world in darkness
. A disbeliever (kafir) covers and suppresses the natural seed of truth within themselves . - The Context of Warning (Inzaar): Inzaar means to warn of an imminent danger out of genuine care, allowing a person to save themselves before it is too late
. A warning sign is placed before a cliff, not at the bottom . This verse served as a reassurance to the Prophet ﷺ, reminding him that after years of clear warnings, the persistent disbelief of stubborn opponents was due to their own closed-mindedness, not a fault in his conveyal of the message .
Verse 7: The Spiritual Consequence of Denial
Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment."
- The Sealed Heart (Khatam): Humans are born upon a pure natural state (fitrah)
. However, when someone repeatedly sees the truth and arrogantly rejects it, the immediate consequence in this life is the loss of their spiritual perception . Their hearts are sealed, their hearing is blocked from benefiting, and a veil (ghishawah) covers their sight so they can no longer perceive reality clearly . - The Nature of 'Azaab: The word 'azaab (punishment) relates to 'azb (sweetness)
. Punishment represents the complete removal of sweetness and enjoyment, replaced by continuous physical and mental pain . The punishment in the Hellfire is described as 'Azeem—enormous, severe, and mighty .
The Softness and Firmness of the Heart
The Arabic word for heart, qalb, literally means "to turn about"—reflecting how rapidly our spiritual states can shift . Every persistent sin places a dark spot on the heart . If a person seeks sincere forgiveness (tawba), the heart is polished clean . But if one persists in disobedience without repentance, the rust accumulates until the heart becomes entirely blocked to guidance .
To guard against spiritual hardness, we should frequently turn to Allah with the supplications of the Sunnah:
- For Firmness:“O the One Who turns the hearts, make my heart firm on Your Religion.” [al-Tirmidhi]
- For Guidance:“O Allah, guide my heart, make true my tongue and draw out the malice of my chest.” [Abu Dawud]
- For Light:“O Allah, place light in my heart.” [Abu Dawud]
- For Purification:“O Allah, wash my heart with snow water, and cleanse my heart of sins as You cleanse a white garment of filth.” [al-Nasa'i]
- For Faith and Beauty:“O Allah, make faith dear to us and make it pleasing in our hearts and make disbelief, defiance and disobedience hateful to us and make us among the rightly guided.”
May Allah make the Qur’an a source of continuous blessing for us, a light in our hearts, a companion in our graves, and an intercessor for us on the Day of Judgement .
