How to Rise in Self-Development: The Spiritual Law of Elevation

We all want to grow and develop ourselves naturally to our full potential. We want to become the best versions of ourselves, but how do we go about it in the right way—one that elevates us rather than bringing us down? When people new to self-development undertake this task from a bottom-up perspective, they might try very hard to elevate themselves, only to discover that the more they try, the more they fall. This happens because they are trying to achieve growth through the wrong means.

The Paradox of True Elevation

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah elevates him. This is a foundational principle for bottom-up self-development.

  • The Ego's Fall: The more we attempt to inflate our own ego to force self-elevation, the further we fall.

  • Divine Physics: The more we humble ourselves before God, the higher He elevates us. It functions like a law of physics—just as oil mixed into water naturally and inevitably rises to the top.

Humility vs. Debasement

Being humble to God does not mean debasing ourselves before other human beings. Rather, it means submitting to God and honoring His divine principles.

In the Quran, Allah tells us that He created humans in different nations and tribes so that we might know and learn from one another, despite our varied backgrounds. The best among us are simply those who are most mindful of violating the natural principles of self-development that He sent to guide mankind.

Rising Like Oil: Taming the Ego

If it is our ego that drives us to elevate ourselves unnaturally, know that we will eventually fall. Conversely, like oil submerged in water, true spiritual substance will naturally float to the surface no matter how deep someone tries to submerge it.

If we attempt to elevate ourselves using ego-driven principles, we only hurt ourselves and grow spiritually sick. It is in our absolute best interest to tame our egos, refine our character, and try our best to improve ourselves with complete sincerity (Ikhlas).

Prophetic Model of Self-Development & Variation

When we advance in self-development, it is crucial to examine the patterns of behavior modeled by our ultimate role model and emulate them in our daily lives. With respect to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), his lifestyle—the Sunnah—is preserved for us to study and apply. What we find within it is a masterclass in subtle variation despite underlying consistency. This variation is essential for holistic self-development, giving us balance, adaptability, and an element of strategic unpredictability to disarm those who oppose the truth.

Consistency Without Rigidity: The Rhythm of the Sunnah

The Prophetic lifestyle balanced unwavering spiritual devotion with deep human connection, avoiding the trap of rigid, mechanical monotony:

  • Solitude and Social Engagement: He spent long hours of the night standing before his Lord, yet during the day he was fully present among his people.

  • Vocal and Silent Worship: Some of the congregational prayers were recited aloud, while others were observed in silence.

  • Asceticism and Enjoyment: Most days he subsisted on simple dates and water, yet he joyfully partook in rich meals and shared food when dining with others.

  • Affection and Utter Devotion: He was exceptionally kind, present, and loving toward his wives, yet nothing dissuaded him from stepping away for worship when the call to prayer came.

  • Flexible Discipline: Some nights he stood in prayer until dawn, while on other nights he prayed for a portion and rested.

Structured Flexibility in Daily Routines

The Prophet’s daily routine was anchored by the five daily prayers, which themselves contained dynamic elements of variation. Their precise timing shifted relative to the movement of the sun, framed within prescribed time windows.

This structure provided maximum flexibility. The daily framework possessed enough variation to adjust, strategize for success, and maintain operational agility while fulfilling core duties completely.

Building Strategic Unpredictability

When we are serious about our own self-development, we must establish a solid daily routine infused with subtle variation. Integrating flexibility prevents burnout, builds psychological resilience, and keeps our efforts dynamic:

  • Flexibility & Balance: Avoid rigid habits that crumble under unexpected pressure; adapt your schedule while maintaining core spiritual habits.

  • Strategic Focus: Cultivate an element of agility so you remain unstoppable in the pursuit of your noble goals.

Diversity and variation are immense blessings. When utilized with wisdom and tact, strategic rhythm becomes our greatest asset on the self-development journey.

Self-Development and Responsibility: The Power of Response-Ability

When we focus on self-development, taking responsibility for ourselves and our circle of influence is paramount. We are primarily accountable for our own souls. Being truly "response-able" means having the capacity to act deliberately after reflection, choosing our response rather than reacting impulsively. The thoughts that cross our minds stem from various sources—divine inspiration, whisperings from satanic forces, or our own internal inclinations. What we choose to do with those thoughts is our responsibility. We are called to rise above acting on pure instinct, utilizing the higher intellect Allah gifted us to think before we act.

Wisdom Over Destruction: Choosing Win-Win Action

Rather than allowing volatile reactions to control us, we must suppress destructive thoughts and implement positive ones with wisdom and tact suited to the situation. We do not "set the place on fire." Inspired by the principles of Stephen Covey, we aim for win-win outcomes where everyone benefits from our actions:

  • Pulling Others Up: True growth means elevating the people around us, never pulling them down or burning relationships to ashes.

  • Tactful Implementation: Channeling internal thoughts into constructive, wise solutions that resolve conflict rather than exacerbate it.

Becoming a Catalyst for Positive Change

When we develop naturally, we become catalysts for positive change within ourselves and our surrounding environment. In fact, when a believer acts with right intent, everything in creation aligns to support that mission—every human, every creature, even the fish in the sea pray for the one who teaches good. This is the essence of a bottom-up self-development process rooted in Prophetic methodology.

Growing in a Safe Environment

To achieve true personal development, we must keep growing with responsibility every single day. Our wins do not come at anyone else's loss. Everyone can win together as we continuously evolve in a positive, safe, and professional environment anchored in faith and mutual respect.

The Blessing of Difference in Self-Development

We find diversity throughout nature—countless species of plants, vast breeds of animals, and distinct ecosystems. Likewise, human diversity in races, perspectives, and talents is by Divine design, created for our own mutual good and natural development.

Stagnation vs. Friction: Why Diversity Drives Growth

Imagine a world where all humans shared the exact same race, origin, and worldview. Without difference, there would be no intellectual friction, no challenge, and ultimately no progress for humanity:

  • Stagnant Societies: Communities with minimal diversity and few new ideas become static, where innovation is rare.

  • Refining the Soul: It is only when our perspectives are challenged that the best within us comes to the foreground.

  • Divine Purpose: God tells us that He created us differently so that we may learn from one another, reminding us that the best among us is simply the one most God-fearing and pious (taqwa).

The Natural Selection of Ideas

On a level playing field, superior ideas naturally rise to the top—a process of natural selection designed by the Creator. He does not wish for us to remain mediocre, but to develop ourselves fully.

If you examine the biography of any self-made, successful man or woman, you will find that they were continually challenged. It was through enduring this friction that they developed their internal strength, allowing the best of their character to shine forth and benefit their entire circle of influence.

Without truth and excellence rising to challenge lesser concepts, the world falls to corruption, injustice, and sub-optimal living. For true self-development to occur, we need a peaceful environment where the best ideas naturally lead.

Humility Before the Truth

Recognizing our differences requires deep humility. If I am proven wrong, I must willingly accept what is right; if others are wrong, they should yield to the truth. Personal ego must always step aside in deference to truth. As God proclaims in the Quran: "The truth has come, and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is bound to vanish."
