"Mindfulness" has become a fashionable buzzword in modern mental health and self-development. Eastern and Buddhist traditions have caught on across the Western world as people realize the importance of being present and in tune with whatever they are doing. In Asian civilization, the concept of Zen describes focusing completely on the task at hand—such as giving full attention to washing the dishes.
While Western culture has largely lacked this tradition until recently, mindfulness is already deeply integrated into the Islamic way of life. The concept of Zen is remarkably similar to the concept of Ihsan—doing everything with spiritual excellence, living with the constant awareness that Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) watches us at all times.
Mental Health, Purpose, and Prayer
A vast array of modern mental health issues stems from a severe lack of mindfulness. Moving through life on autopilot leaves us unaware of our internal states, leading to emotional confusion and anxiety. True mindfulness requires a clear philosophy of life—a spiritual destination (Akhirah) that prevents us from becoming like a rudderless ship drifting at sea.
This mindfulness is practically embodied through the daily Islamic prayer (Salah):
- Structured Presence: Prayer forces a person to pause for 10–20 minutes at least five times a day at regular intervals throughout the day.
- Contextual Recitation: The worshipper selects passages from the Quran to recite based on the context of their existence and their immediate needs for that time and place. Thus, the prayer grounds a person in deep mindfulness.
Building an Integrated Lifestyle
The whole Islamic lifestyle is ingrained in activities that keep a person mindful, which is why studies note lower rates of mental illness in practicing Islamic communities compared to others.
Mindfulness is vital for both mental health and self-development. If we do not already have an integrated lifestyle that emphasizes mindfulness, we can build one tailored to our needs. Establishing daily habits that keep us mindful will naturally improve mental health, ground our purpose, and propel our continuous personal growth.
